An Open Work Permit opens one door towards easing employment and adds to the extra-added benefit of working anywhere within the country. An open work permit gives multidimensional exposure to foreign nationals looking forward to a career path devoid of any restrictions. An Open Work Permit is permissible to be availed by a particular category of individuals only as the list goes like :

  • Spouses or common-law partners of some temporary foreign workers
  • Spouses or common-law partners of some international students
  • Some international students who have graduated from a delegated program of study in Canada
  • Permanent residency applicants who have applied through the inland spousal sponsorship process
  • Some young workers participating in programs offered through International Experience Canada (IEC)
  • Refugees, refugee claimants, protected persons and their relations

An open work permit has been very advantageous for most as it can be applied for without a specific job offer. Because it is not job-specific, the applicant must fulfil some of the exact requirements as individuals with other work permits. This includes not needing the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or proof of an offer of employment from an employer who has paid any compliance fee. Open Work Permit is again further bifurcated into Unrestricted & Restricted Permits. The difference of province could also be one of the differences that occur in the application process where the application takes a turn.
